Yolanda M. Borrás
Yolanda specializes in the development of music programs for children in multiple languages. She is the author of award-winning educational materials for children and leads teacher-training workshops in the United States and the Dominican Republic. Her work includes early childhood music education, educational consulting, and cultural and business management. Currently, Yolanda is President of the Foundation of the Villa de Santo Domingo and Executive Director of Conciertos de la Villa de Santo Domingo, an annual festival of orchestral concerts and educational activities whose mission is to value, preserve and promote the revitalization of the Colonial City of Santo Domingo.
A native of the Dominican Republic with degrees from Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and Columbia University Teachers College, Yolanda Borrás has taught in the USA, the Dominican Republic, Asia, Latin America and Europe. She is a member of leading organizations in the field of music and education, such as Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education), the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development and the National Association of Bilingual Education, among others. Yolanda was a featured alumni in the Johns Hopkins University Magazine for "Teaching music in many languages". She has been interviewed for programs on NPR and by EdLab at Columbia University Teachers College. She has also been featured in national and international publications including the New York Times. Yolanda Borrás is listed in Who’s Who of Outstanding American Women and Who’s Who in American Education.
In 1999, Yolanda founded I'm Bilingual! an innovative bilingual integrated arts program for young children in New York City, named by CBS as "Best Language Classes in NYC".
In 2006, she released the CD ¡Caramba! Kids, which was distributed to more than two thousand preschoolers of the Dominican Republic and which was awarded a Silver Honor Award by Parents' Choice Awards in the United States of America. This CD has been relaunched under the title ¡Cantemos todos juntos! (Let's sing together!) with an acompanying pedagogical guide for teachers, printed in English and Spanish versions. In 2017 she published his first illustrated book for children, Los pajaritos which was awarded an International Latino Book Awards, three Dragonfly Book Awards and a Gold Award from Mom's Choice Awards. In 2018 she published the illustrated song book La finca which was awarded a Gold Award from Mom's Choice Awards.
